A system-crash-free vacation
The events of this last week included my family’s (mostly) annual vacation to Wallowa Lake, Oregon. This vacation includes my brother’s family and my parents. Last year, while I was on this vacation, R-Technics had a server crisis. Before leaving for this year’s vacation, I told Reid specifically, “no server crashers while I’m on vacation!”
Last year, after I left for vacation, Reid performed some server maintenance upon my request. It was one of those situations where, had we left the machine running, it would have run indefinitely -- that is until it was power cycled, which Reid had to do for the maintenance procedure -- at which point the hardware decides it no longer wants to function properly. This crisis ate up at least two of my vacation days last year.
Well, I’m happy to say that there were no server crashes this year. Further more, had there been one, Reid could probably have dealt with the issue himself without involving me since we’ve significantly improved our disaster recovery processes over the last year.
However, this year, upon arriving at our destination, I discovered that my Dell laptop had utterly died. Yep, it won’t even power up. This left me with absolutely zero Internet connection for four days. Come to think of it, that may have been the longest period of time that I have been without any Internet access for possibly twelve years. Amazing!
