Today, the R-Technics staff went to see the movie Up. Our need to research the latest in 3D animation requires us to view and closely analyze the works of 3D pioneers.
Up is a "3D" movie, in that, when shown in properly equipped theatres and when wearing 3D glasses, you get a 3D effect. So I'm not sure how to actually refer to this technology because I've always considered Pixar films to be 3D, at least in contrast to the typical animated feature from the likes of Disney. Perhaps the term "3D experience" vs. "3D animation" -- just a thought.
The story was entertaining and touching. I certainly enjoyed it. My wife said she teared up at times. I would have, but I fought the tears back so as not to fog up my 3D glasses. Since the movie was just recently released, I won't discuss the story so as not to be a spoiler.
The visual quality of the movie was as spectacular as we've come to expect from Pixar. The 3D experience was a nice enhancement, and perhaps the best implementation I've experienced myself. However, the movie didn't focus on that as a plot device, which is a good thing. This movie is likely to be just as enjoyable without the 3D glasses as it was with them.
Another thing I liked is that the movie was proceeded by an animated short, which was funny and entertaining. Disney used to do this type of thing on a regular basis decades ago. I hope it's a regular practice that will be revived by Pixar.
Anyway, Up was fun movie to watch and I certainly recommend it. For those of you who've seen it, I'd like to hear what you thought of it.
