Feature Review: Slide Scheduling

6/30/2016  < Previous  Next >
A new feature to SongShow Plus 8.3 is Slide Scheduling. With this new feature you can specify when a particular slide will be presented based on a date range and/or day of the week. If you use a slide show to prepare a list of announcement slides that you present each week before or between services, you will find this new feature useful. Prior to 8.3, when presenting the announcement slide show, you would either need to take care that your announcement slide show only contains current and relevant slides, or when adding a slide show to a program, you select a specific slide order so that you can exclude the slides you don't want to show. Now there is an easier way.

As an example, let's say that in early November, you have an opportunity to prepare some slides for the rest of the year. Your church is holding a Christmas related event on December 20th. You prepare the slide ahead of time, but you don't want it to show until after Thanksgiving nor due you want it to appear after the event has taken place. With 8.3, you can now specify a that this slide only be presented in the date range of 11/23/2016 - 12/20/2016. You can now put this slide out of your mind knowing that it will be automatically included when this slide show is presented during that time range, and will be automatically excluded before and after that.

As another example, lets say that you use the same announcement slide show for all events during the week. However, for the weekend services, you want to include a slide reminding people to silence their cell phones. This slide, however, is not necessary for the other events of the week. You can specify that the cell phone announcement slide only be presented on the days that you have worship services, such as Saturday or Sunday. Now you can put this slide out of your mind knowing that it will only show on those days.

The automatic checks for the inclusion and exclusion of slides is made at the time that a slide show is presented. Note that if a day or two passes without restarting a slide show, the slides that were initially included or excluded don't change. For Signage users, this isn't a problem, however, since the slide show automatically restarts each day.

This new feature makes it easier to use the slide show capabilities of SongShow Plus to prepare and schedule your announcement slides.

This is pretty kewl.

But I will say that my initial thought from just the title was that I could set a slideshow to start at 8:00 and automatically stop at 8:30. Now THAT would be really kewl.

...set a slideshow to start at 8:00 and automatically stop at 8:30...

Gary,
You can actually do this with SongShow Plus Signage....

With SongShow Plus Signage you have the ability to start and stop (and switch) slideshows on a schedule 24/7...

I expected to be able to tell the today's message slide to stop showing at 11:30. Sorry that this isn't how it worked out.

Christopher - thanks for your feedback.

At this time, the granularity of the Slide Scheduling is to a date or day of the week rather than specific times.  Because the state is only checked and set at run-time, changes that take place after the slideshow is running are ignored.

This is a first step into this feature.  If it proves to be popular, there may be additional enhancements down the road.
