Tips & Tricks > You can play divx files in SSP v7

Hi,
I have been reading the forums for quite a while but I haven't seen this tip posted yet. Maybe it's because everyone already knows about it... I found out entirely by accident that you can play divx files in ssp (version 7) if you have the divx drivers installed and rename the file ext to read .avi
So if the file is "file.divx" rename it to "file.avi" and it will play, but only if the divx drivers are already installed. The great thing for us is that divx files are much smaller so there is a significant file storage savings, and the divx files seem to run more reliably for us. Good luck and I hope that this helps.
God Bless,
Dan

It is the same with *.VOB files (DVD's) remane them to .mpeg and thay will play like a vifeo file
Although the legality of this may be questionable by having it on your drive.
My $0.02c worth

Sorry about the spelling errors.

Actually, quite often changing VOB files to mpg will not work. Someone explained it was because many dvd's have a menu structure whose definition is embedded in those vob files so that simply attempting to stream them fails. Once I copied a vob file, renamed it, and ran it for a few minutes as a test. Fine. But during its live showing it crashed further into the file. I have since learned that I need to test playing the entire file before concluding whether it will work.

I took one of our non-copyrighted DVDs and copied them to the desktop. I then changed the VOB to AVI and it worked; sort of. If I started at zero it played something different than if I started at 1:00, even though the first itme was 3.5 minutes long.
