I heard and ex-Microsoftie on a podcast confirming the reset of the Vista build. He said initially it was to be all built with the .net framework, but they found it wasn't near robust enough for OS level stuff.

He compared it to building a 100 story skyscraper. They got to the 50th floor and found that it was leaning. So they had to tear it down and start from scratch, but with the same initial deadline.

He attributed much of Vista's difficulties with being rushed out the door because of the restart.

Speaking of OS evolution, as we get machines with more and more memory, the OSes are going be be more and more 64 bit.

I think it would be great to have a 64 bit version of SSP, so that the 64 bit OSes wouldn't have to thunk down to 32 bit to run SSP.

I heard today that MS has stopped production of Vista. I haven't had time to validate that. Has anyone else heard this?

What is Microsoft selling then, XP? Windows 7 is only in Beta.

They may have enough Vista in the pipeline to take care of demand.

And computer makers don't need Microsoft "producing" Vista to keep licensing it and loading it on machines.

I'm guessing the off the shelf demand for Vista is probably about gone. Most everyone who wants to upgrade has, or (at this point) is waiting for 7.

However, these are educated guesses on my part, based on the rumor Gary was spreading.

I, myself, have not heard that rumor and cannot confirm or deny the veracity of it's claim.
