PTG - Package To Go or Backup/Restore is slow or appears to hang when creating a package or backup file

1/11/2024

Applicable SongShow Plus Versions:
This article applies to all versions of SongShow Plus using Package To Go or Backup/Restore tools.

  * Updates correcting this issue may be available. Ensure that you are using the most current build of SongShow Plus from the Download page before proceeding. *

Symptoms:
The Package To Go or the Backup/Restore tool is slow when creating a package.  The progress bar may stop and give the appearance that the Package To Go (PTG) or the Backup/Restore process has stopped or hung up.

Possible Cause:
Large amounts of video or image files can cause a delay in the package process while the compression step is occurring.  Additional time is required for this step.

Possible Solution:
There are several steps to the compression process for the Package To Go when images/videos are included.  Allow additional time for the compression steps to finish. It is recommended that each of these categories is backed up separately to ensure all files are included.  Refer to article SSP88.

Possible Cause:
If the destination of the package is a network drive or external device, such as a USB thumb drive, additional time may be required depending on the latency of the destination device. USB devices can be especially slow when doing the PTG compression directly to the external device.

Possible Solutions:

  • Allow additional time for the compression steps to finish when packaging directly to an external device.
  • Create the package locally on the desktop and then copy/move the completed package to the external destination.

Possible Cause:
The external destination of the package, such as a USB thumb drive, may be full or defective.

Possible Solutions:

  • Perform a full format and/or check disc operation on the external device.  Bad sectors or corrupted space can cause issues.
  • Create the package locally on the desktop and then copy/move the completed package to the external destination.  If the package completes locally but the copy to the external drive does not then the external device may be faulty.
